30 Days of Dreamers & Doers | Dekia Peeples
Dekia Peeples the owner of and stylist at Kut-N-Up Salon. She creates different styles, cuts and/or colors for clients to show off one of their biggest accessories.
What is your earliest memory being involved in your business?
I have always loved styling hair. Starting with babydolls and Barbies to doing ponytails and putting in barrettes on myself, French braiding and even clipper cutting my hair. Folks cannot believe I cut, style and color my own hair. Lol, I love it! As I grew older, I became that neighborhood beautician. Folks came to me for braids, micros and updos. Your very own "Kitchen Beautician", lol.
What set you on this path?
Honestly I will never forget this, I was maybe in the 5th grade. I needed a relaxer and this was the 3rd night my mom fell asleep on me and I had had it, lol. I pulled that box relaxer out, read the instructions 10+ times, said a prayer and then went to WORK!! LOL, my hair was laid and it didn't fall out. I was pumped!
What about this lane makes you so passionate about it?
I absolutely love what I do. I wake up saying to myself, "who's life will I change today with these fingers?"
I receive great fulfillment in making folks feel good about themselves through my services. When I get those clients that tell me I have helped them with their self confidence that's the best form of payment. When I spin them around and I hear that 'Yasssssss!!!'.. Lol, I gather my entire life.
What did your journey to where you are currently look like?
My journey to where I am now was a great one. I had two teachers I will never forget, Mrs. Deamer and Mrs. Rainey. They made sure I learned everything I needed in my basic classes to prepare me for this forever growing, changing and evolving field. Once school was complete, I had the pleasure of working with people that loved what they do first and foremost. We taught each other, loved each other, which prepared me for where I am now. For that I will be forever grateful to my co-workers/family.
10 years ago would you have pictured yourself in this position?
Actually 10 years ago I saw myself further ahead than I am now. The only thing I'm waiting to do is obtain my barber license. From that point I have a few more goals to achieve.
How do you hope people feel after working with you?
I want folks to feel satisfied. I want to know that I succeeded in bringing my clients vision to life and that they have received a great service in a timely manner.
Can you name a highlight of your career?
My highlight so far has been this year. After being out on my own for only 1 year, I was blessed with the opportunity to expand. Words can't explain the feeling I have with the progress KutN Up has made.
Anything you’d go back and change?
Honestly the only thing I WOULD change would be - I would've went to Barber school instead.
Cutting is definitely where my heart is!
Any advice, tips or reminders?
My advice is LOVE what you do. Never stop learning because this is a field that grows and changes non-stop! Remember someone will ALWAYS need a haircut, when you do it, create a lasting impression. :)
