A WORD FROM THE LOCALS: Zay Gaines

Identity by Design Magazine is setting out to highlight the hidden gems Omaha has to offer creatively. There are plans to branch outside of Nebraska, however we want to focus on and support our locals.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Zay Gaines, an 18-year-old up and coming rapper from Omaha. A Burke High graduate, Gaines has been writing music since he was a kid and works closely with @buckpistorius. Gaines and Pistorius most recently dropped their new mixtape Houston, Flexas and it's a must listen.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST?

"Well I don't know that many local artists to have a favorite."

WHAT IS YOUR OPNION OF THE CREATIVE CULTURE IN OMAHA?

From what I've seen musically, there isn't much. I would say the art scene here is overlooked and at times [exhibits] are rushed and bland.

SO THERE SEEMS TO BE A LACK OF INTEREST IN GENERAL ABOUT THE ARTS IN OMAHA, I CAN SEE HOW ONE, AS A MUSICIAN, WOULDN'T BE TOO INSPIRED. SO WHAT IS IT THAT INSPIRES YOU AND KEEPS YOU GOING?

"What inspires me to keep going right now is the fact that I'm [doing] pretty good now without the exposure and financial support. The fact that I can do and get better inspires me. The fact that I haven't met a lot of people inspires me. Anything that I want to do and haven't done, inspires me to keep going."
